WHAT:
Las Vegas, NV - In its third year, the Springs Preserve Photo Contest 2010 challenged local photographers to create images inspired by the Springs Preserve's mission "to sustain our land and embrace our culture." Entries were received exploring the topics of sustainability, the natural environment, and the history and culture of Nevada with each individual photo representing the Preserve's mission through the artist's eyes. Participants dropped off their entries May 15 and 17 at the Springs Preserve and contest winners will be announced at a reception in the Patio Gallery on Thursday, July 15, 6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. The exhibit will open to the public July 16 through Oct. 17, 2010, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. daily in the Patio Gallery where it is free for members or included with general admission.
"This is a great way for the public to participate in what we have to offer at the Springs Preserve," said Springs Preserve Curator, Mike Spiewak. "Many people take photos on vacations and road trips, but beyond posting them on social media sites, how many people really have the opportunity to see them? This is a chance for our guests to share their perspective on the Springs Preserve, our mission, and the state of Nevada."
This year's judges were challenged in selecting the winners due to the outstanding quality of the submissions. Landscape photographer Chuck Seifert, The Alexander Dawson School photography teacher David Finfrock, and Shawn Hummel, local fine-art photographer were the 2010 contest judges.
Prizes awarded to winning photos include Best in Show, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in both the Adult and Youth Divisions (youth category 11 - 17, adult 18 and older). Mission awards will be given for images that best represent Sustainability, History/Culture, Natural Environment, and the best photo taken at the Springs Preserve. Submissions can win awards in multiple categories. Cash awards range from $50 to $500, and mission awards prizes were donated by Dick Blick Art Materials.
